Motorcycle hit and run leaves young woman dead

A Minnesota Army National Guard member is dead after a motorcyclist struck her. The incident happened during the early morning hours of Sept. 25.

According to law enforcement officials, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred in Elko New Market around 2:30 a.m. when a 33-year-old man operating a motorcycle crashed into the 24-year-old woman as she was standing with her friends on the side of the ninth block of Main Street. Instead of stopping at the scene to assist the victim, the biker continued driving but was later apprehended by law enforcement officials.

The woman succumbed to her injuries, and first responders to the scene pronounced her dead. Once police located the motorcyclist suspected of causing the crash, they placed him in the Scott County jail. According to the report, he has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide and with driving with a revoked license. The report also noted that the man has a past criminal record for terroristic threats, domestic abuse, theft, burglary and speeding.

The victim was from Lakeville and was in the area visiting friends. At the time of the accident, she was waiting for a family member to come by and drive her home.

The sudden loss of a loved one in a pedestrian accident can be very heartbreaking for family members. Besides the emotional loss, there is the loss of the decedent's present and future income that the family depended on. Furthermore, costly funeral and medical expenses can add to the family's financial burdens. People who are faced with similar circumstances might want to get in contact with a local attorney who handles personal injury claims. The decedent's surviving family members may be able to pursue damages via a wrongful death claim.
