A 51-year-old Minneapolis man lies in a hospital bed recovering from emergency surgery. The extent of his injuries is not known, but he is listed as being in serious condition. The man was injured this past weekend while he was riding his bicycle down Summit Ave. in St. Paul. Police indicate the man was traveling west when an SUV that was traveling east, turned left and struck him.
The accident occurred around 7:30 a.m. and police do not believe the driver of the SUV was impaired. Upon hitting the bicyclist, the driver stopped and called 911. Police investigators continue to attempt to determine what factors may have contributed to the car and bicycle accident. So far, the driver has not been cited for violating any traffic laws and no criminal charges have been filed.
It’s finally spring in Minnesota and after a long and cold winter, many Minneapolis residents are eager to dust off their bicycles and take to the roads and trails. The accident described above, illustrates the devastating consequences that can result when drivers fail to remain aware and alert of the location of pedestrians and bicyclists.
While thankfully in this case, the 51-year-old man is still alive. He likely suffered serious and painful injuries that will be slow to heal. In fact, it’s possible he may never fully recover. This is especially true in cases where a bicyclist suffers an injury to their head, neck or back.
It’s difficult to put a price tag on the significant financial and human costs that result from car and bicycle accidents. However, for those individuals and loved ones forced to deal with the injuries and consequences of these types of accidents, a personal injury lawsuit can aid in covering damages related to current and future medical costs.
