What to know before you drive that rental car this summer

If your summer vacation or upcoming business trip is going to require renting a car or you’ve been involved in a crash and will need to rent a car, driving it will take a bit of learning. It’s best to get familiar with the car while you’re still on the rental car lot. If something isn’t working or you have questions, ask an employee before you leave. Don’t just assume you’ll figure it out later.

Even if you rent a car that’s the same make and model as yours, if it’s a newer one, it will have enough differences to require taking an extra few seconds (or more) to do simple things. Even that hesitation in finding a button, knob or lever can keep you from avoiding a crash. That’s why it’s smart to check the following items while you’re still at the rental car facility.

The crucial safety features

Take time to find the horn, emergency brake, turn signals, mirrors, windshield wipers control and defroster. Make sure they all work. The same is true with all the lights, including the hazard lights.

Learn how to adjust the driver’s seat, and make sure it’s in the right position for you. This can be a critical safety issue if you can’t reach the pedals easily.

Other features you’ll probably use

Don’t wait until you’re on the road to figure out how to work the GPS or anything on the infotainment center. Set your destination before you leave. It’s best not to be distracted by music or news when you’re learning to drive a new vehicle, but if you do, it’s best to find your channel or podcast before you drive.

Remember that a lot of other people will be on the roads in rental cars over the next few months – many in areas with which they’re unfamiliar. A lot of them probably won’t take the time to get to know their rental car as we’ve recommended here. If you’re involved in a crash caused by a negligent or reckless driver or one caused by an issue with your rental car, it’s wise to get legal guidance to help ensure a fair settlement.
