Not sure if your vehicle is subject to a recall?

Vehicle recalls are usually issued after a manufacturer and/or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identifies a defect that poses a safety risk or fails to meet federal standards. When acted upon promptly, recalls can save lives.

Unfortunately, many drivers remain unaware that their cars are subject to recalls, leaving them and others on the road in danger. If you are unsure whether your vehicle is under recall, checking is a quick effort that can make a big difference when it comes to your safety and the safety of those traveling with and around you.

How and where to look for information

Recalls often involve serious defects such as faulty airbags, brake failures, steering issues or electrical problems that can cause fires or sudden loss of control. Manufacturers are required to notify registered owners by mail, but if you moved recently, purchased a used vehicle or bought your car from a private seller, you may never receive notice.

To check your vehicle for recalls, locate your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), found on your car’s dashboard near the windshield or inside the driver’s door frame. Then visit the NHTSA recall website and enter your VIN. This will show any open recalls that have not yet been repaired. Many automaker websites offer similar search tools, and your dealership can also assist.

If your vehicle is under recall, contact an authorized dealership immediately. Recall repairs are performed at no cost to you, as manufacturers are required by law to fix these safety issues. Delaying recall repairs puts you, your passengers and others at risk of injury or death.

Sometimes drivers ignore recall notices, assuming the problem is minor or that they will handle it later. This can be a dangerous mistake. For example, the Takata airbag recall involved inflators that could explode and cause fatal injuries. Even issues like fuel line defects or software malfunctions can result in catastrophic consequences if left unresolved.

Checking for recalls only takes a few minutes but can save lives. Make it a habit to review your vehicle status annually and before long trips. Staying informed and addressing recalls promptly can help to ensure that your car remains as safe as possible on the road and that you will remain free from liability should a crash occur despite your best efforts.
